Drivers Licenses – Requirements for our Motor Homes

You will be required to have a valid full driver’s licence, with a minimum requirement of at least 5 years driving experience on a full licence. Licenses must be in English; alternatively an international driver’s licence will be required. No special licence is required to drive these vehicles. For all clients it is advisable to have driven a larger than average vehicle prior to hire, or to have driven a vehicle whilst towing a trailer. Most motorhome dealers in your country of origin offer short driving courses for motorhomes if you feel at all unsure about driving a larger vehicle.

Driving Times and Distances

Allow time for your journey, on average allow around 200 KMS per day for a comfortable period of driving. Generally our clients hope to cover far more distance than is pleasurable for a holiday. All roads throughout the island are spectacular; you will want to stop often to enjoy the views on your way to your next campsite. The maximum speed allowed is 100kms per hour, but this can drop down to 30 km and on average expect to be driving at around 70 KM per hour. Never plan to do night time driving, as this is unadvisable to anyone unfamiliar with New Zealand.

Road Conditions

The roads in New Zealand are well maintained. We do have a few un-sealed roads, and these are not to be used by any rental vehicles (car, camper, campervan or motorhome) in New Zealand. This will not limit your travels at all though. Rental vehicles are also not allowed on ski- area access roads, but these are well serviced by resort shuttles and buses.

Snow chains are compulsory for vehicles hired from 1st May – 30th September, but they may be still be required in October and April too, we shall advise you on pick-up of your motorhome, they are available for hire at NZ$ 70.00. They are required to be carried at all times, and non compliance can lead to a police spot check and instant fine.
